Drugs in sport The nature of sports promotes a strong desire to win, and many athletes will do anything to rise to the top. Every elite athlete wants to get an edge over their competition, causing many athletes to turn to performance enhancing drugs to gain this edge. Drug use in sport can cost players their super stardom dream career, but more seriously, their own lives. The wide-spread illegal use of drugs has eliminated the question of which athlete has the strongest raw power, to the question of which athlete has the greatest scientific base behind them. These questions have many pros and cons to each side of the argument, causing this question of debate to overlap and only leave deeper confusion in its path. The principle†¦show more content†¦They need to recognize that the chances of a gold medal in a few years time out-weighing long term serious health problems are very slim, therefore athletes should be protected from such harmful drugs as much as they can be, as the athletes thems elves manage to have a blind spot for the damage involved. The opposite side of the coin in this scenario would be making the use of performance-enhancing drugs legal. Sports authorities classify certain methods of training and strengthening legal, when in reality the distinction between natural and unnatural body enhancing is completely untenable. Already athletes use a vast amount of dietary supplements, exercises, equipment, training timetables, and medical employment to embellish their overall performance. There is nothing natural about having surgery on ligaments, taking vitamin pills, wearing whole-body Lycra suits, pumping weights everyday, and wearing specialised shoes which all give a major artificial advantage to those who can afford the benefit. Nevertheless, some athletes are taking illegal drugs amongst these aids, and are giving themselves even more of a advanced performance but also leaving behind those athletes who are clean, at a disadvantage. This destroys the concept of fair play, whereas legalisation would allow all athle tes to compete openly and fairly without any doubt or suspicion over the playing field.
